Lake Johanna: Minnesota Suburban Lakes Nautical Archaeology 2 Project Report
The purposes of the Minnesota Suburban Lakes Nautical Archaeology Project: Targeted Sonar Survey & Anomaly Assessment Project (MSLNA-TSS-AA) was to conduct targeted and comprehensive remote sensing sonar surveys using new and improved sonar equipment; and use underwater archaeological reconnaissance to answer questions about and determine the nature of specific anomalies. The lakes focused on during the project are Prior Lake in Scott County, Lake Pulaski in Wright County, Medicine Lake in Hennepin County, and Lake Johanna in Ramsey County. MHM conducted data review and dozens of anomalies were identified as wrecks, objects, or false targets using only their acoustical signatures. Another 14 wrecks/anomalies were investigated using SCUBA reconnaissance to determine their nature. Where appropriate, Minnesota Archaeological Site Forms were submitted to the Office of the State Archaeologist and the identified wrecks were placed into their historical contexts after conducting maritime historical research. This information was presented to the public in 4 maritime historical and nautical archaeological reports centered on the 4 different lakes.
